With Spectral Lore you really don’t have to explain much. If you’re not in on it, let me just tell you you’re missing out on some of the best atmospheric black metal in recent times, maybe ever.

After releasing its first real full-length last year (20 years of demos don’t count I guess) to great acclaim, sole member Wintherr is quick to present us with another one. Still raw as hell, still dense. Still great.

Do I really have to explain why I can’t wait to listen to this album? It’s the posthumous farewell of the guitar hero of the XXI century, a final chapter written too soon, after which we know there’s no sequel. Nothing else comes next but the thought of what could have been, and the occasion to mourn this huge loss. It will be hard to listen to this EP, but I can’t wait to listen to new music by Alexi Laiho for one last time.

I just wrote a review for this album but it’s probably my favorite metal album of the year so far. Pure dissonant weirdness of the ugliest variety. If that’s your thing please give this a listen.
